The
title of the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts teases an important part of the
Harry Potter tradition
Today,
Warner Bros. announced the title of the second part of his Fantastic Beasts
series in five parts: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which teases
much of the Harry Potter tradition.
The
film takes place after the events of 2016 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find
Them, in which Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander visits New York and
unintentionally disrupts the plans of a dark sorcerer named Gellert Grindelwald
(played by Johnny Depp), who posed as a high-ranking Auror named Percival
Graves (played by Colin Farrell
"Grindelwald" should be
a household name for Harry Potter fans. While Voldemort was the main antagonist
of this series, Grindelwald was, in many ways, his predecessor. It was first
featured in Harry Potter and the Witch with a reference that Hogwarts director
Albus Dumbledore defeated him in 1945. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,
Harry, Hermione and Ron meet Dumbledore's brother , Aberforth, who tells them
that when Dumbledore went home to help his brother take care of their sister
Ariana in 1899. Then he met Grindelwald and found a wizard with a power and
ambition that matched the his. Together, they searched for three powerful and
legendary artifacts, the Deathly Hallows, and began to chart a new order for
the wizarding world. "Great plans for the benefit of all wizards,"
Aberforth said, "and if a girl was neglected, who cares when Albus was
working for the greater good?" Rowling also established that Dumbledore
fell in love with Grindelwald during this time.
Care
for Dumbledore's sister sparked a fight between the trio, resulting in a duel
that killed Ariana. Grindelwald fled, but continued his search for the Deathly
Hallows. He finally discovered and stole the Elder Wand, which he used to
precipitate his brutal rise to power across Europe. It was in 1945 that
Dumbledore fought and defeated him. Grindelwald was imprisoned in Nurmengard, a
wizarding prison he established, where he later died at the hands of Voldemort
who was himself looking for the eldest wand to help his own rise to power.
