AVG Antivirus Free is an antimalware security suite that includes an active file and an e-mail scanner, as well as Web browsing protection. Avast Software (the main competitor of AVG) bought AVG Technologies in October 2016, but the two brands and product lines remain separate.

Highly customizable behavior: it does not look like at first glance, but AVG Antivirus Free offers a variety of cursors and check boxes to allow you to change its scanning behavior. Click the Menu button and select Settings to view all your options. They are graded and nested intuitively, and you can create backups of your settings (it would also be nice to have an option to reset all to the flaws).

Useful jargon explanations: Many settings have an "i" icon, you can put your mouse pointer on to display a small pop-up window with more information. If not enough, is there a sensitivity to the context? Top right will take you to an AVG web page with more detailed information about what the setting does. Ideally, this additional layer of information would be available offline, but such a feature is unfortunately rare among antivirus applications.

Historically the detection of malware above average: According to tests conducted in the past by independent laboratories such as AV-Test and AV Comparatives, AVG performed moderately better than expected, A free malware scanner.

The inconvenients
Upsell-oriented interface: Antivirus companies prefer to pay customers, and they are sometimes more aggressive on converting free users than we would like. When you double-click the AVG icon in the Windows system tray, it does not take you to the antivirus interface. Instead, it displays AVG Zen, which announces three tools not included in the AVG Antivirus Free package: PC Tuneup, HMA Pro VPN and Web Tuneup. There is a button on the far left to access your antivirus, but the next window divides your tools into Basic Protection and Full Protection, which is not included. Then there is a section below with more product offers.

Full Protection includes a software firewall, file encryption and a mechanism to detect when an impostor Web site tries to trick you into giving your credit card information; This package costs $ 70 per year. It does not include Virtual Private Network (VPN) or debugging tools; Those that come with AVG Ultimate, which costs $ 100 a year. Alternatively, you can get the Tuneup PC tool separately for $ 50 per year, the VPN for $ 100 per year and the Tuneup Web tool for free.

These are all significantly higher prices than you will see for Norton, McAfee and other competing security suites, making the upsells much more unpleasant. Not to mention that the functionality of PC Tuneup is largely reproduced by CCleaner (Windows, Mac), which you can get for free.
